Glock Gen 6 vs Extreme Abuse: 1000 Round Sand Torture Results

If Glock marketing isn’t enough for you—and it shouldn’t be—this review answers the real question:

Are the Glock 17 Gen 6 changes actually worth your money, or is this just another refresh?

I ran this pistol hard.1,000 rounds. Sand. Drops. 25-yard accuracy. 100-yard hits. No babying it. No excuses.

This Glock 17 Gen 6 was equipped with a Vortex Defender ST and a SureFire X300UA, and it was tested the way a duty or home-defense pistol should be.

If you’re new here, I’m the Grumpy Paratrooper.I test guns so you don’t have to.

Glock 17 Gen 6: What’s Actually New?

Glock didn’t reinvent the wheel—but they did finally listen.

Key Gen 6 Changes

  • RTF6 Grip Texture – More aggressive than Gen 5, but not sandpaper

  • Improved Palm Swell – Feels less like gripping a 2x4

  • Enlarged Beavertail – Better protection, could still be shaped better

  • Thumb Indexing Pads – Helps lock in a higher, more consistent grip

  • Undercut Trigger Guard – Allows higher grip and better recoil control

  • Deeper Front Slide Serrations – Much easier to rack under stress

  • Flat-Face Trigger – Better feel, same Glock trigger issues

Most of these are upgrades people were already paying for aftermarket. Glock finally rolled them in from the factory.

Trigger & Ergonomics Breakdown

Let’s not sugarcoat it.

  • Trigger pull averaged 5.25 lbs.

  • Still spongy

  • Still Glock-ish

  • Flat face feels better, but it’s not a miracle

If you hated Glock triggers before, this won’t convert you. If you’re used to Glock triggers, this is at least a step forward.

Optic Cut & Mounting (Vortex Defender ST)

There’s been noise online about Gen 6 optic screws backing out.

Here’s what actually happened:

  • 1,000 rounds fired

  • Screws marked with paint pen

  • Generous Loctite application

  • Zero movement

  • Zero shift

Yes, the optic plate is plastic. Yes, metal aftermarket plates will show up. But in real testing? No issues here.

25-Yard Accuracy Results

  • 19-round magazine

  • Mixed ammo:

    • Federal 115gr

    • Fiocchi 115gr

    • Federal Champion

  • 3-inch group

  • One flyer (shooter error)

For a duty pistol with a stock Glock trigger? That’s solid.

100-Yard Shooting (After Sand Test)

Is 100 yards realistic for most pistol use? No. Is it a great test of fundamentals, optics, and platform? Absolutely.

Even after being dropped in sand, packed with grit, and run dirty:

  • Multiple hits on steel

  • Trigger was sluggish from sand

  • Gun still ran

That tells you a lot.

Sand Torture Test Results

This pistol was:

  • Dropped

  • Kicked

  • Buried

  • Packed with sand (optic included)

Then loaded and fired.

Results:

  • No failures

  • No broken parts

  • No optic movement

  • Slight sluggishness initially

  • Continued to cycle and fire

This is why I call Glock the Honda Civic of Violence. It’s not glamorous — it just works.

1,000-Round Reliability Summary

  • Rounds fired: 1,000+

  • Malfunctions: 0

  • Failures: 0

  • Post-sand test: Still operational

That’s Glock reliability, plain and simple.

Who Is the Glock 17 Gen 6 For?

This pistol makes sense if you want:

  • A home-defense gun

  • Proven reliability

If you already own a Gen 3–5?You’re not under-gunned.
